WHAT IS THE GIRLS’ BRIGADE?
The Girls’ Brigade (GB) is a Christian, international, voluntary organisation providing a regular meeting time for activities for girls & young women.
All our leaders are trained in youth work and at 1st Larkfield we have an impressive range of skills, so we can all do what we’re good at whether it be cooking, running games, crafts, organising camps or dealing with admin and paperwork.
We are affiliated to Kent County Council and have all the experience and qualifications you’d expect us to have to run a great youth organisation, and we have all been CRB checked.
At GB we seek to enable girls & young women to develop in confidence, ability, friendship & citizenship & are committed to nurturing the unique value of each and every girl in our care.
WHAT DO WE DO?
At 1st Larkfield we try to do as many different things and have as much fun as possible. We meet on Monday nights during term time & are split into 4 age groups.
The girls work towards badges & gain awards for each year that they attend GB. We also do loads of activities such as games, crafts, singing & learning bible stories. We get involved with other local GB companies for events like picnics, ice-skating & competitions. We have a separate summer programme so that we can be more relaxed & do some of the things we haven’t had time to do over the rest of the year eg. swimming, BBQs, treasure hunts. We also have weekends away and camps for Juniors, Seniors and Brigaders.
We encourage all our members and their families to come to church. There are activities organised for all ages of young people by the church and we have lively family services once a month. We have church parades about once a month. However, you are not excluded from GB if you do not attend church.
We do lots of fundraising events that are fun & everyone can join in. We appreciate all the support we can get from girls & their families & friends. As we are a charity much of the money we raise goes into the work we do with the girls - buying resources & uniforms & trying to keep the cost of GB down for parents. But we also help local and national charities.
WHAT DO WE WEAR?
Uniform these days is very informal. We wear GB polo shirts and sweatshirts with smart black or navy trousers and black shoes. It’s practical for activities on Monday nights but still smart enough for more formal occasions such as church parades and award ceremonies.
We always give girls a few weeks to make sure that they’re happy with GB before we buy in uniform for them. We ask you to buy your daughter’s first GB polo and sweatshirts when she joins at a cost of £25.00 paid in advance. As she outgrows these we will give you the next size up and ask you to return her old uniform.
Please keep GB uniform in good condition as we will have to charge you for damaged or lost items.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
We charge subs of £2.00 per week & this needs paying each week even if your daughter is unable to attend as it covers us to insure her over the year. It includes sweets from the tuck shop to the value of 25p per week. We do offer a small subsidy if this is paid termly in advance and you will receive a letter before each new term begins letting you know the termly cost.
If you are a UK Taxpayer please consider completing a Gift Aid declaration form so that, as a charity, we can benefit to the full. If you would like to know more about this just ask a leader.
Other activities such as summer camp & district events are additional but the costs are always kept to a minimum and we are always happy to receive payments by instalment.
HOW CAN MY DAUGHTER JOIN?
It’s simple! When you come along on a Monday night you’ll be asked to complete a Consent Form so that we have basic necessary details for your daughter on record. We enrol new members regularly through the year at which time girls will receive their Membership Cards.
